Marriott Sued for “Deceptive Business Practices”
07/19/2019
Marriott International is being sued by the District of Columbia, who alleges the lodging company’s mandatory resort fees tacked on at its hotel properties are illegal and deceptive. According to the lawsuit, Marriott has nearly 200 properties that charge fees ranging from $9 to $95 per day. Resort fees are often not itemized separately, but can be included with taxes and may only become visible to the consumer at the end of the booking process.
The lawsuit seeks to force the hotelier to include all mandatory fees in its advertised room rates and to reimburse D.C. residents who the paid the fees, in addition to paying penalties.
