Fall Event Cancellations Mount
06/05/2020
World Dairy Expo 2020 and Summerfest are the latest large-scale events to announce cancellations for September in Wisconsin. World Dairy Expo typically draws over 60,000 attendees from around the world to the Alliant Energy Center campus in Madison, and its estimated economic impact on the Greater Madison area is $50 million. In a press release, expo management said that based on national CDC guidelines and Dane County restrictions it would not be feasible to hold the event this year. It will be the first time in the event’s 53-year history that it has been canceled.
Meanwhile, Summerfest, which had been rescheduled from its original July schedule to September, has announced it will cancel for the year. The 11-day event draws more than 700,000 people to its lakefront grounds each year.
In an announcement on its website, the event managers said:
“All of us – our staff, vendors, sponsors and partners – are the stewards of the incredible festival experience that fans have come to love and, together, it is our honor to be responsible for this storied tradition. Please know that our team explored countless options to ensure the Summerfest tradition could continue in 2020 in a safe and healthy manner. Yet, given the uncertainty surrounding large gatherings in these unprecedented times, we cannot in good conscience proceed with the festival this year.”
